Cornwall-based rock band Coldrift is releasing its debut full-length CD “The Smoke After Sex” on July 7 at a release party at Murphy’s Inn on Second Street West.

Lead singer Jean Beaulieu and guitarist Marty Verville have been writing music for the last five years, all the while jamming together every Friday.

Things began to get serious when they added a rhythm section consisting of veteran musicians Marc Muir on bass and Steph McAlear on drums.

With its provocative title “The Smoke After Sex”, the album offers a classic rock n’ roll

sound tinged with southern blues that recognizes the band’s diverse influences, including Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and the Foo Fighters. It showcases Beaulieu’s powerful voice and guitar hooks across eight original new songs.

"So far the reaction has been nothing short of amazing," said Beaulieu of the public’s reaction to the few songs the band has made available via Facebook. “We can't wait for Saturday night.”

Coldrift’s line-up is as follows. All members originate from Cornwall.

Muir formerly played with Superstone and the General Electryk and McAlear has performed previously with Graham Greer.

The album was recorded here in Cornwall at Muir's Music Manor. Muir produced and engineered the effort himself.

“Jean and Marty have many songs but thought that these were a good fit for the album,” said Muir.

The album was mastered in Toronto at Joao Carvalho's studio, who has previously worked with bands such as Sloan, the Sheepdogs, John Hiatt and Nickelback. Greer (formerly of the Barstool Prophets) lent some harmonica work for the album.

“We were treated like royalty by Joao and his staff,” said Beaulieu. “Joao is one of the coolest cats I’ve ever met.”

The CD can be found at CD Warehouse in Ottawa. It is also available on iTunes. A tour in support of the new album is expected to be announced in the near future.

“Very special thanks to Brian Smith for shooting our album cover and Ron Piquette for the lay out and graphic design,” added Muir. “Both tasks were carried out with much skill and professionalism. We are very grateful we had the opportunity to work with them both.”

The finishing touches are being put to the band’s new website: coldrift.com

The CD release party, with special guests Graham Greer and Winston Marley, is set for July 7 at 9 p.m. at Murphy’s Inn on Second Street West in Cornwall. There is no cover charge.
