On Tap: Ryan Chaytor, founder of the Cornwall HomeBrew Club, is inviting everyone to Schnitzels European Flavours (158 Pitt Street) for ‘Learn to Brew Beer Day’ on November 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is free.
The patio at Schnitzels European Flavours (158 Pitt Street) will be a makeshift mini-brewery during ‘Learn to Brew Beer Day’ as the area’s best home brewers will be there to demonstrate what it takes to make your own brewski.
“It’s going to be a great day. We’re going to have a couple of different set ups on the patio. An all grain set up and a small extract brew for new beginners,” said Ryan Chaytor, founder of the Cornwall HomeBrew Club.
Chaytor is a beer aficionado and a home brewer that decided to start a club to embrace the craft of making your own beer.
Learn to Brew Beer Day will feature two brewing set ups on the patio at Schnitzels, and many of the club’s 27 members from Cornwall and the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry area. The beer being brewed is a 'replica' of Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome Ale from the UK. Two five-gallon batches will be made at the event.
“Anyone can be a home brewer,” he said. “Home brewers can create a beer or brew that stands up to craft beer.”
Special guests will be Mario Bourgeois, head brewer/owner of Cassle Brewery, and Ron Brennan, owner of Old 4th Brewing Company.
Chaytor said the brewing process takes anywhere from two to six hours, depending on the preference of style. That means the beer at the event won’t be ready to drink, since it also has to be fermented for at least two weeks and up to a year. Those who plan to chug, should be forewarned there is no free beer. Instead, spectators will partake in brewing demonstrations, discuss the methods of brewing with amateurs and experts and enjoy an afternoon in the company of fellow beer enthusiasts.
“Come out and join us November 2 at Schnitzels and have yourself a pint,” said Chaytor.
The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
