CORNWALL, Ontario - Sometimes the best way to reveal who you really are is by putting on a costume.

Katrina Primeau, 17, geeked out with 140 fellow cosplayers, gamers, and anime fanatics at the inaugural CoTiCon (Cornwall's Tiny Convention) in the salons of the civic complex on Aug. 30.

The Long Sault resident was transformed into a troll from the webcomic series Homestuck. The extreme makeover allowed her to get into character for a Q&A panel session.

Her handmade costume and body makeup mixed several shades of blue, and a large pair of bright yellow and orange horns bursted out of her hood.

"It's all about exploring different characters and recreating ourselves," said Primeau. "It's a lot more fun to spend money on costumes and conventions than drugs and alcohol."

She attended a recent anime convention in Montreal with her friend Melanie Samson, 14, who was also in full costume at CoTiCon.

Both experiences resulted in new friendships with like-minded peers, but this time it happened closer to home.

Samson, a Cornwall resident, kept to herself through the entire interview until the duo was asked why they spend so much time making costumes and hanging out at conventions.

"I'm very shy," she said. "Dressing up and being here in this atmosphere makes me feel confident and able to socialize."

Annie DeRochie, 17, organized the event through the city's youth entrepreneurial summer program to provide teens and families a more playful convention.

"Everyone had a great time and that's what matters," said DeRochie. "A lot of people showed up from outside of Cornwall."

Whether or not CoTiCon will return is still undecided. Regardless, the young entrepreneur plans on using Lamoureux Park as a meeting place for a local cosplayers group.

Throughout the convention, several super-powered competitions took place. Check out the list of winners:

Art contest: Alexandra MacDonald & Lollisoup.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament: Christian Reynolds & Remii.

Masquerade/costume contest best in show: Meg Muller.
