A business with a storied past in Cornwall is making a significant investment in the future.

Your Credit Union is currently completing a $1-million facelift to its Downtown Cornwall office building at 321 Second Street West.

“From our point-of-view, it represents a significant commitment to the City,” said Doug MacMillan, Sales Manager at Your Credit Union.

Mr. MacMillan said the project will benefit the local economy, with over 75 per cent of the work being completed by local tradespeople.

“We’re thrilled to see a long-standing company like Your Credit Union reinvesting in our City and in the Downtown,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “This is great news for the employees, customers and the community as a whole.”

The renovations began in early July and they are expected to be completed in October. In the meantime, the 10 employees of Your Credit Union continue to serve the institution’s 5,800 member-owners from a temporary office at the rear of the property.

The work will result in a modern new façade to the building as well as significant interior upgrades to create an open-concept environment with comfortable customer waiting areas and customer service “pods” at both ends of the building. For some added local flavor, the building will be equipped with a system that will project photos of local landmarks inside the facility.

“We want to make it more open and welcoming,” said Mr. MacMillan.

The business has been a fixture in Downtown Cornwall for 57 years, originally starting out as the Howard Smith Credit Union serving employees of the former Domtar paper mill. Since that time, the credit unions for employees of the City of Cornwall and the two former hospitals in the City have joined Your Credit Union.

Today, Your Credit Union offers a variety of financial products and services for members residing throughout Cornwall, Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.
