Some 700 Sears Canada employees found out today they are being laid off as the retailer makes a move to slash costs.
Company officials confirmed four people have been laid off at Sears' Cornwall location.
And there is every indication the bulk of the job losses across the country will be borne by department store staff.
"The reductions are spread pretty well across the country as far as geography is concerned," said Alicia Richler, a Sears spokesperson, adding anywhere fro two to four people at each store are being laid off.
Sears Canada announced 360 people are being laid off from its department stores and about 300 from distribution centres.
The remaining workers are being let go from head office and other support areas.
In a statement, Sears said the move is required to restructure its business model.
Sears Canada has been changing its operating principles to encourage more customers to visit its stores after years of declining profits.
