Future Shop still eyeing Cornwall

Despite closing more than a dozen stores across Canada this week, a large electronics retailer is still considering Cornwall as an expansion option.

Best Buy Canada, which includes the Future Shop brand, announced this week more than a dozen stores bearing both monikers would be closing their doors.

It has been speculated Cornwall could be home to its first Future Shop as early as this year, likely to be built at a north-end commercial development.

Elliott Chun, a commmunications manager with Future Shop, told Seaway News Friday the plan remains to open new stores, despite the closures announced this week.

Over the next 36 months, Best Buy will move into the second phase of its so-called “Renew Blue” strategy with plans to open new Future Shop Small-Concept web stores and new Best Buy Mobile locations across Canada, “where and when appropriate” reads a news release.

Last fall Future Shop indicated discussions are taking place to build a new Future Shop in Cornwall that could open some time this year – perhaps as early as the summer.

But at the time Chun stopped short of suggesting construction plans have been solidified. In fact, after speaking with corporate decision-makers, Chun said things like design plans and lease agreements must still be confirmed before Future Shop is prepared to make a firm commitment to opening in the city.

“We’re optimistic the pieces will come together for Future Shop to open (in 2013),” said Chun. “There’s certainly a keen interest for us to be in the Cornwall market.”
