CORNWALL, Ontario - Pennies are no longer in circulation, but at least one local charity organization is still hoping for big things from the one-cent piece.
Desjardins Caisse populaire de Cornwall is collecting pennies for a campaign to benefit the Children's Treatment Centre in Cornwall.
A bin is being set up at both Caisse locales in Cornwall to collect donations.
"The fund from this drive will provide life-changing counselling to abused children and much-needed support for their families," said Denis Beaudry, Caisse general manager. "The service the Children's Treatment Centre provides is close to my heart and the hearts of all of us at (Caisse)."
Treatment centre patron Sean Adams said the importance of the facility is steeped in local need.
"At a time when so many agencies rely on government funding, the centre is proudly independent, placing its trust fully on the generosity of the community, which is its only source of income," he said. "The struggle to eliminate child abuse is far from over but together we're making genuine progress."
