The 16th annual “Avonmore Oktoberfest” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 under a heated tent on the Avonmore Fairgrounds. The doors open at 6 p.m. with an authentic German buffet meal from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Music will be provided by “Edelweiss” from Montreal. All tickets must be purchased in advance, as there is a limited number available. Tickets may be purchased at Barkley’s Store, Scotiabank and Patsy’s Diner in Avonmore; at Monkland Mini-Market; and at Freeman Sport ’n’ Print on Pitt Street in Cornwall; or from directors of the Roxborough Agricultural Society, host of the event. Proceeds go toward maintenance of the fairgrounds in Avonmore. Even though the Township has started construction on “North Stormont Place,” the new community centre, there will be still be lots of on-site parking on the other side of the tent.
During the evening, a special presentation will be made. Scotiabank-Avonmore location was a major sponsor at this year’s Avonmore Fair; Scotiabank matched the gate receipts from the Saturday and will present the directors of the Roxborough Agricultural Society a cheque for $5,000. Karen Campbell, manager of the Avonmore location of Scotiabank, will make the presentation.
Scotiabank believes in people and in being involved in the community. They are proud of our long tradition of supporting the communities in which we do business and where Scotiabank employees live and work. Scotiabank was able to assist the Roxborough Agricultural Society with their Team Scotia Community Program. Organizations eligible under this program in Canada are any community-based, non-profit or registered charitable organization. To qualify for support for your organization under the Team Scotia Community Program, a group of two or more employees of the Scotiabank group must be personally participating in a community fundraising initiative for the organization. Funds raised are matched up to a maximum of $5,000 per approved fundraising initiative per year.
The Avonmore Oktoberfest draws people from all over Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, and has become a fall tradition in the area. Given the October weather in the area and the fact that the event is held under a tent, the September date has been chosen. There will be heaters under the tent, if the evening is cool. A crowd favourite each year is the wide variety of homemade desserts, which are included with the meal of German potato salad, sausages and sauerkraut, with a roll and coffee. Of course, the bar will have a selection of German beers for your enjoyment. There is lots of free on-site parking available as well.
