The spring series of Aultsville’s Wednesday Night Film Series has been announced. Monthly screenings begin on Feb. 18and continue until May. Passes for the four film series are only $400 and are available at the Civic Complex box office (613-938-9400). All screenings take place at Galaxy Cinemas.
The spring series begins Feb. 18 with a screening of the Israeli film Lemon Tree. The film, directed by Eran Riklis (The Syrian Bride), tells the story of a widowed Palestinian woman whose lemon orchard becomes a so-called “security threat” when the Israeli defence minister moves into the property next door and wants the orchard exterminated. The film is more than just a political allegory on Palestinian/Israeli relations as it also has a subtext of the absurdity of bureaucracy and the legal system. The film also examines the role of gender in both Palestinian and Israeli society and draws parallels between the wife of the Israeli minister and the Palestinian widow. The film is clearly an analogy for a land divided.
The film stars Hiam Abbas, known to regular film series goers as the mother in last fall’s season opener The Visitor, and she gives a wonderful, humanist performance here. The film showcases the talent she has previously shown in international films like Satin Rouge and Free Zone.
The film had its North American premiere last year at the Montreal World Film Festival. Winner of the audience award at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and nominated for seven Israeli Film Academy awards, Lemon Tree screens at 7 p.m. at Galaxy on Wednesday Feb. 18. Season passes will be available at the door for this screening as well as in advance at the Civic Complex box office. Single tickets will be available at the door for all screenings for $12 each.
The Wednesday Night Film Series is a fundraising event that supports the ongoing operation and maintenance of Aultsville Theatre. Future screenings will be announced in this publication as well as the aultsvilletheatre.com website.
