With more than 32 local artisans, a parade of 25 horse-drawn vehicles, a giant Harvest Tent, and ongoing music and farming demonstrations, the culmination of the 2009 edition of the Harvest Fall Festival will take off on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan.
Artisans from last year’s very successful Festival, which had more than 2,000 visitors, have been eager to return and new ones have been signing up. All are committed to demonstrating their skills in various forms of pioneer craftsmanship. Frequent comments have cited the pioneer authenticity of the Festival and its non-commercial focus.
In addition to a blacksmith, featured artisans on the 20th include saddle and harness makers, chair caners, dress makers, quilters and weavers, canoe and wagon makers, wheelwrights, tanners, rope maker, broom maker, reenactors, a tinsmith, and even an old-fashioned hair curler. There will be a special “shear to shawl” demonstration throughout the day involving old-fashioned shearing, spinning and weaving. The list extends to 34 artisans at this time.
As in the past, visitors will be able to witness one of the largest horse-drawn wagon and carriage parades in Eastern Ontario, this year numbering almost 25. There will be on-going harvesting and farm equipment demonstrations. Visitors with a flair for pioneer fashion are invited to come dressed in period dress and compete for prizes as best dressed and/or most unique costume.
In addition to sampling and taking home preserves, baked goods, and plants, from the Harvest Sale Tent, visitors are invited to compete for the biggest, best decorated or most unique zucchini in the Pioneer Museum’s Annual Zucchini Contest. There will be children’s pioneer games and crafts, storytelling, a petting zoo, music all day including a hymn sing, and even a Town Crier as part of this unique and popular annual event.
The Glengarry Pioneer Museum is located in Dunvegan, Ontario on County Road 24 (Dunvegan Road) at the crossroad with County Road 30 (Greenfield Road). Parking is available in several nearby locations. Those coming from Ottawa should take the 417 east to Exit 51, south toward Maxville for 2 km, then east on County Road #24 to Dunvegan.
