Pennies for Puppies

“Pennies for Puppies” is a project run by Carefor to help breast cancer survivors pay for a prosthesis needed to replace a breast, which has been lost to cancer. “Puppies” refers to prostheses and “pennies” help pay for the prostheses.

Jars are being placed all around SD&G and the city of Cornwall, at various locations, with Carefor’s information on each jar and the pennies collected are put toward the payment of prosthesis. Many women who are found to have breast cancer do not have insurance, have to stop working for a time, maybe without benefits and their prostheses are very costly. Pennies for Puppies help these women.

Sometimes when the body loses one sense, another sense becomes more powerful and replaces the one lost. So six pennies are placed in each new jar to represent the loss.

The project was first launched three years ago in Cornwall at a women’s entrepreneur group meeting by a woman who had lost both breasts to cancer. Her twin sister had died a few years earlier of the disease.

The twins have a sister who, with three friends, have run the project for three years and have just recently turned the project over to Carefor.
