Official groundbreaking ceremony of the new Township Hall and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) offices, took place at the site, directly across from the current OPP facility in Long Sault, on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

The $6 M facility is being developed in partnership with the Ontario government, and will replace current outdated municipal and OPP buildings. The new 15,000 square foot municipal facility is more centrally located and will provide modern infrastructure, efficiencies and legislative compliance. The Township will be providing leased premises to the Long Sault OPP detachment. The new OPP facility will accommodate 68 officers, staff and auxiliaries and will house the in-service training unit, highway safety training partners, and the emergency response team.

The Township has been diligently pursuing this building opportunity for quite some time. Mayor McGillis stated that, “We are excited about this partnership arrangement. The collaborative efforts of everyone have enabled us to make this construction-ready project come to fruition and will provide timely economic stimulus and create jobs for our region”.

Inspector Dave Springer stated, “The new buildings are the direct result of effective partnerships reflective of the OPP’s long-standing core value of fostering positive relationships. The facility will provide the community with an open and professional workplace that will benefit our partners and stakeholders for years.”

The governments of Canada and Ontario, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, are providing funds in the amount of $904,739 each for the new South Stormont municipal facility.

MP Guy Lauzon and MPP Jim Brownell, several OPP delegates as well as representatives from Guy Saumure & Sons Construction Ltd. and Eastern Engineering joined the Township officials for the official groundbreaking ceremony.
