Russell Township Mayor Ken Hill and La Nation Mayor Denis Pommainville have been unanimously elected as South Nation Conservation chairman and vice-chairman respectively for 2010.
The election occurred Feb. 18 during the SNC annual meeting held at the main offices in Finch. Also on the agenda were official recognition of Moose Creek conservation partner Andre Lafleche, guest speaker Meredith Brown, executive director of Ottawa Riverkeeper, and the annual auditor’s report and financial statements.
Hill will carry on the position he moved in to from vice-chair last year. Pommainville will continue in the second-in-command spot he took over from Hill. Berwick’s Floyd Dingwall will remain on the executive as past chairman.
Pommainville thanked members for the opportunity to continue working at the forefront of an organization whose contribution to municipal environmental programs he values highly. In his comments, Hill took the opportunity to praise his 12 colleagues around the board table for being “in it together” and staff who see what they do as a mission rather than just a job.
He said he hoped with his comments to initiate a new annual practice of reminding the board and the public of the positive SNC accomplishments of the previous year.
Among those accomplishments, he listed educational initiatives, building environmental awareness and participation, enhancing relationships with municipalities, planting 165,000 trees, harvesting 150 hectares of certified forest, fish habitat improvement, a new spill response project and wellhead security upgrades.
The auditor’s report and related statements reflect a sound financial situation at SNC, with 2009 revenues coming in at over $5.7 million towards expenditures of just over $5.6.
