Two Cornwall teens from the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Stormont recently placed fourth in the Sea Cadet Canadian National Sail Regatta. The regatta took place in the waters of Lake Ontario off the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario.
The Sea Cadet Corps Coxswain, CPO1 Timothy Woodbeck and QPO1 Devin MacDiarmid completed against other Sea Cadet provincial teams from all across Canada. All teams participated in a series of races during the week of August 18 to 22 to determine the eventual winners of the National competition.
This event caps the sail training year for these Sea Cadets. The team from Cornwall Sea Cadets has been in competition since last September 2007 to earn a spot at the Sea Cadet Canadian National Regatta. They had first competed in September 2007 at the Rideau Flotilla competition where they earned a spot at the Provincial competition. They then competed at this event in June 2008, where they placed fourth in Ontario.
Seamanship and sail training are two of the many aspects of the Sea Cadet training program. Through the sailing program every cadet will learn how to sail a small boat and acquire the skills he or she needs to excel at this sport. The cadets will also learn life skills such as leadership, personal confidence, teamwork, and self-discipline.
The Sea Cadet program is open to all youth in Canada between the ages of 12 to 19. Young people can experience these types of adventures by becoming part of the Cornwall Sea Cadet Corps. The cadets meet every Monday evening at the Cornwall Armoury on Fourth Street East, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This program is sponsored by the Department of National Defence and the Navy League of Canada and there is no charge to parents to have their child join.
