When America pulls out

First Quebec residents, then residents of Ontario, followed by the balance of residents of Canada, and now some Canadian military service personnel are all asking for clarity on our objective in the Afghanistan war, and why we have such close ties to the military policies of the US Pentagon military. For years now, these questions have been left unanswered by our government. Now, in a twist of irony, those Canadian policies that seemed to be those of Past US President George W. are about to be un-sewed by President Obama. This President is seeking clarity on his country’s determination on winning the war. This President’s views have been, to say the least, very controversial on this war and he has not shown the type of historical obstinacy that shaped other war Presidents such as Lincoln, Roosevelt, and the two Bushes. President Obama has thus far shown more interest in domestic improvements such as health care, the environment and education than the war. He has not procured the argument and gut conviction of those military generals that believe the Taliban can be defeated and the war still could be won. With the recent news that President Hamid Karzai has been cutting side deals to keep himself in power with local warlords should the US pull out, I would think that the war mission has not met its objectives and that President Obama will soon be bringing the troops home. As such, the question then turns to our Prime Minister for now we Canadians deserve to know what statements and political language will his government use to convince us that all this has been worthwhile. The stage, as they say, it set for yet another round of political dancing around an issue that a majority of Canadians already know the answer to, and this federal government could have known should they have taken the time to ask us.
