CORNWALL, Ontario – Staff members at a long-term care home in Cornwall braved a plunge into frigid waters at an annual fundraising polar bear dip.
The wintry event raised over $1,000 to support special summer activities for residents on Wednesday (April 22).
Karen Roth, executive director, Jason Laplante, dietary manager, and housekeepers Julie Brisson and Cindy Smith donned costumes and plunged into a three-foot pool of frigid water and ice.
“These funds will allow us to add more activities that the residents truly enjoy,” said Roth.
Originally the four staff members were supposed to take the dip in March, but had to post-pone due to several outbreaks. To make it up, a bucket of ice was added for every week of delay.
“It was unbearable!” Roth recalled.
About 50 Heartwood residents enjoyed watching the spectacle from the comfort of the dining room, while commentary rang over the P.A. system.
“All the money we’ve raised will be used for various extra functions this summer,” said Lisa Herjavec, recreation rehab manager.
The funds will also provide transportation for resident programs, like going to the beach.
“We don’t have a bus so this will help us rent our vehicles,” said Herjavec.
Some other upcoming activities are a Fun Day, Victorian Tea Party, and a trip to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa this fall.
