When Kim Harps-Menard’s daughter Kayla was a little girl, they used to joke about opening a business together and calling it K&K Beauty Salon.  That dream has become a reality as the mother and daughter duo recently opened their own salon at 714 Pitt Street.

“I am so happy that my daughter is following in my footsteps,” said Ms. Menard.  “I remember when I used to practice on my mannequin Kayla would be trying to do the same thing on her Barbie mannequin.  It was so cute!”

For Ms. Menard, owning her own salon has been a

long time dream.  She can still remember doing her grandmother’s hair in rollers when she herself was quite young.  She feels that the Salon will be something to pass on to her daughter, and that has always been in her mind.

Kayla has dreams too.  “I’d like to be a stylist for famous people someday.  Maybe even work in the Big Apple.  We’ll see where things lead,” she said.

For the time being though, both mother and daughter are thrilled to be working side by side in their own business.  Both stylists enjoy the many different facets of hairstyling from cuts and coloring to fancy updo’s.  The pair are ambitious.  They have already expanded and now have an additional two stylists as well as an esthetician at work in the salon, creating 5 jobs in a matter of a few weeks.

“It is wonderful to see family working together and to have young professionals remaining in Cornwall to establish their businesses,” said Candy Pollard, Business Consultant with the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre.  “Cornwall offers great opportunities for our younger generation.”
