Many families came out to enjoy winter fun at the 2nd annual Family Day at Summerstown Trails event which was hosted by the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) on Monday.

While the weather was cool, the bright sun and being out on the trails on XC skis or snowshoes warmed everyone quickly, even the grown-ups.

“As was the case last year, today was a great success, and we’re very pleased with the turnout,” said Martin Bowman, FOTST President. “Many families came out to the trails for the first time to try out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and took advantage of the fact that rental of  the equipment was free. What is even better is that many said that they would come back.”

After being out on XC skis for the first time, 8 year-old Avah Cook of Cornwall said that what she liked best was “sliding on the skis, and especially not falling.” After pausing, she then added “and the hot chocolate!”

When asked how many people attended throughout the day, event organizer Doug Boeckh said: “We’re not sure as to the actual count, but one thing we do know is that we gave out 15 dozen free hot dogs. So unless some had two, we had at least 180 people.”

The trails are situated on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401, and are open seven days a week. Rental of equipment on weekends only. More information at www.summerstowntrails.com
