CORNWALL, Ontario – Good ol' fashioned apple pie. That was all that mattered during the annual bake off at Heartwood long-term care by Revera.

Heartwood pie off winners (from left): Danielle Kenney (first place), Lori MacMillan (second place) and Margaret Gelinas (third place).
Canes, wheelchairs and walkers came flooding into Heartwood's dinner hall, as the aroma of ten homemade apple pies hung heavy in the air.
Their sweet filling and buttery, flaky crust was on display as three judges lined up to take a taste.
Third place winner Margaret Gelinas said the secret behind her pie was (drumroll, please!) nutmeg. She got her pie filling from the Heartwood apple tree.
The competition was open to Heartwood residents, staff, family members and volunteers.
Murray and Friends, a husband-wife guitar playing and singing duo, serenaded a group of nearly 100.
Lori MacMillan, a family member of a resident, took home second place.
The prestigious title of best apple pie went to Danielle Kenney, Heartwood recreation and restorative care manager.
She was delighted and surprised.
"This keeps everyone's spirits up," said Kenney. "They look forward to it every year."
