CORNWALL, Ontario – Downtown Cornwall merchants will be wearing their most hideous holiday attire to give local charities a boost during the holidays.
Ugly Sweater Day for the United Way of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry is taking place all day in downtown Cornwall on Dec. 20.
"We're encouraging everyone downtown – merchants and their clients alike – to dress in an ugly Christmas sweater for the United Way," said Louise Gendron, Studio 101 owner and event organizer.
Downtown businesses participating in Ugly Sweater Day will have a donation jar in-store so you can support the United Way.
Gendron, a member of the downtown business core, is hoping that having poor taste in fashion will net rich results in fundraising. She said it's the every day members of the community like friends, neighbours and co-workers that keep the United Way in motion.
"It's something fun that will bring a positive tone to fundraising for the United Way," she said.
Gendron noted that fundraising can be a drab affair and a lot of pressure for the volunteers in charge. But the fact that ugly Christmas sweaters are hot for the holidays is sure to bring some new attention to a longstanding charity.
"When you go visit your favourite merchants downtown and see that they're wearing an ugly sweater you can't make fun of them unless you're willing to give to the United Way," she laughed.
You can find ugly holiday sweaters and donation jars at Studio 101, Life's Little Pleasures, Bar Q, Moustache Joe's, Pure Esthetics, Oasis Hair and Day Spa, Pommier Jewellers, Dish Real Food and many others shops.
