CORNWALL, Ontario – Break out your poodle skirts and roll up your jeans for a sock hop fundraiser this Saturday.
Meet the Sault Crew – a group of men from Long Sault who started hosting themed fundraisers and helping local families down on their luck, three years ago, as they strived to create the village’s signature event.
In its third edition, the Fall Ball returns to the South Stormont Community Hall on Nov. 15. Doors open at 8 p.m.
This evening will get in full swing with live music from AM/FM, an oldies rock-and-roll band, a vintage car exhibit (weather permitting), and prizes for the best sock hop-themed costumes.
So prepare for a time warp because the venue will be plastered with 50s and 60s inspired decorations.
“Every year we change the theme to give our supporters something fun and out-of-the-norm to join in on,” said crew member Joe Harty, principal for East Front Public School.
“Our main goal is to help people in need while bringing everyone together for a worthwhile cause.”
Traditionally, the Fall Ball raises funds for Hospice Cornwall. But when the crew heard about Alanna Wheeler’s tragic story in a letter they received from a senior centre resident in Long Sault, they took action.
Harty says a minimum of $1,000 will be donated to her family to help with lingering funeral expenses.
The 20-year-old with local roots passed away unexpectedly at eight months pregnant in Sept. 2013. Her son Derrick also died.
“We’re not limited by township boundaries,” said Harty. “It’s important to help this family move on.”
Tickets are $10. They can be purchased at Grumpy’s Sports Bar, from any Sault Crew member or at the door on the night of the event.
