The Cornwall Seaway Lions Club is presenting its first ever poker run on Saturday, September 10. Organizer Terry Muir is hoping this event will bring a smile to a child's face as proceeds will go to the Children's Wish Foundation and the Cornwall Children's Christmas Fund.
"We wanted to divide the money raised between the Children's Wish Foundation and to keep some locally," explains Muir, adding, members of the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club made the decision to choose the Children's Christmas Fund.
For nearly eight months, Muir, vice-president of the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club, has been planning the poker run along with help from Joann and Phil Shorey, president of the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club.
The poker run will begin at the RCAFA Wing on Water Street in Cornwall, at about 9:30 a.m. Muir says the course will be about 300 kilometres and will include five mandatory stops and a sixth optional stop.
The rules are simple; you pick up a playing card at each stop to create poker hand. The person with the best poker hand will be eligible for prizes. Muir says the joker cards will be included and they will be considered wild cards.
Although Muir says the poker run is not a race, he says you must complete the course before 6 p.m. in order to qualify for prizes. There will also be prizes for the most funds raised. "The whole idea is to have fun and raise money for a good cause."
If you are interested in participating in the poker run, you should act fast as a limited number of cards are available, says Muir. In case of rain, the run can be completed by car. In the evening, a BBQ will be held at the wing and some of the prizes will be courtesy of Irwin Supply and Bob's Cycle.
A minimum $25 donation per person is required, which will include breakfast at the wing from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Riders are encouraged to find sponsors to raise more money and pledge sheets are available through Muir at 613-362-3101 or Joann Shorey at 613-938-3278.
