CORNWALL, Ontario - A diabetes fundraiser that will combine our desire to help others with our love of beer is in the home stretch.
Jeff Lalonde, is the organizer of a beer tasting event that will bring together a collection of local micro-breweries (they're now known as craft breweries) to sample some of their wares and collect money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The event takes place Nov. 9 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in Cornwall.
"It's important to us because of the awareness it will create about type 1 diabetes," Lalonde said.
Six Ontario craft breweries are on the playbill, including Mill Street, Church Key, White Water, Beau's, Wellington and Hockley Valley.
There will also be live entertainment at the event, and a massive silent auction.
Lalonde says he got the idea for a diabetes fundraiser in a quintessentially Canadian way - he was enjoying a beer while watching a hockey game.
Lalonde had just taken his first sip, when he realized he could tie in Canadians' love of that magic elixir with a fundraiser to help young victims of diabetes.
Tickets are being sold for the event and ample packs from each brewery are being provided, and Lalonde pointed out those who attend the event will be asked to ensure they enjoy the night responsibly.
Prizes are already being secured for the evening, including autographed NHL jerseys and other sports memorabilia.
