CORNWALL, Ontario - Having a sweet spot for neglected animals is the winning recipe for a fundraiser aiming to double last year's success.

The second annual National Cupcake Day fundraiser in support of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry branch will be returning from Thursday, Feb. 20 to Monday, Feb. 24.

Christina Russell, OSPCA event organizer, will be one of many busting out her oven mitts, aprons, and mixing bowls to raise much-needed funds for the animal shelter.

The SD&G OSPCA is encouraging everyone to start their own cupcake fundraiser by registering online at www.nationalcupcakeday.ca. Participants receive a cupcake host welcome package and access to a fundraising guide, posters, recipes, stickers, balloons, and a webpage on their site where your supporters can make a pledge online.

"I plan on baking at least over 150 cupcakes in three different flavours; as well as mini-cupcakes that are dog-friendly for people to purchase for their furry family members," said Russell.

She will be selling cupcakes to her co-workers at Welch LLP and at The Squire Shop on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the community to purchase.

And if baking isn't your thing, no sweat, several participating locations in Cornwall will be loaded with delicious desserts. Check out: Baxtrom's Your Independent Grocer (31 Ninth Street East) on Feb. 20 and 22; The Cornwall Bingo Hall (26 Second Street West) during their 7 p.m. game on Feb. 22; No Frills (on Second Street East) on Feb. 23; and the animal shelter (550 Boundary Road) on Feb. 24.

Last year the event raised $4,500.

"We hope to double that this year," said Carol Link, SD&G OSPCA branch manager. "It's a great way to help the animals if you have a sweet tooth."

Link encourages you to join in as a host or hostess and sell cupcakes to friends, family and co-workers in support of the shelter.

Donations will go towards expenses like vet bills, supplies, food, and operating costs.

An updated list of days and locations will be available on the Ontario SPCA for Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Facebook page in the upcoming weeks.
