CORNWALL, Ontario - Thousands lined up for a winter event that transforms Lamoureux Park into an outdoor adventure for all ages.

On its first of three fun-filled days, Cornwall's Winterfest Carnaval was a hive of activity as families enjoyed ice skating, wood carvings, maple taffy and apple cider tastings, a Fun Zone, and plenty of music - followed by a spectacular display of fireworks by an award-winning technician at 6:30 p.m.

Simultaneously, a slew of indoor activities provided a warmer alternative with facepainting, huge train sets, balloon twisting, skating, and live performances, to name a few.

Mike Dion and Kelly Lanois bring their family every year. They applauded the annual event for providing them with a heartwarming experience at no cost in an otherwise drab part of the year.

"Every year we go skating with the kids. It's a weekend of joy that brings our family closer," said Dion.

At the park's bandshell, music from Touch Bass Entertainment was wailing as the sound of a chainsaw cut the air. Master carver Gerdine Van Woudenberg, of St. Eugene, was busy sculpting child-sized critters out of wood leaving children stumped in amazement.

"This adds another feature to the show," said Woudenberg.

Jason Mitchell, director of Winterfest Carnaval, invites everyone to join in on the fun during the three-day event, running until Monday, Feb. 17.

"We're extremely excited about the turnout so far. Everything has gone off without a hitch," said Mitchell. “Come celebrate with us, there's plenty going on for everyone.”
