CORNWALL, Ontario - Most kids are anxious to tear into a pile of gifts on their birthday, but for Mikalah Kisnics the best part about turning nine was giving them away.

The birthday girl held her party at the Cornwall Aquatic Centre this March with her schoolmates, fellow Cornwall Typhoons hockey teammates, and Cornwall Coyotes soccer teammates.

But Mikalah didn't ask f or any gifts, instead she encouraged her friends to bring a donation for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry branch.

"I don't need anything for my birthday," said the young philanthropist.

Mikalah's response to why she decided to give up a stack of presents for charity was much like herself, short and sweet.

"I wanted to help the little animals," she said.

Mikalah collected an assortment of food, toys, shampoos, and a variety of items for dogs, cats, and guinea pigs at the animal shelter.
