CORNWALL, Ontario - A group of Zumba instructors will be using their high-energy dance moves and music to drown out the silence surrounding suicide at a new fundraising event.
Zumba Plus, a fundraiser in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), is taking place on Friday, May 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Saint Lawrence Secondary School (SLSS).
"The Zumba community recently lost a dear friend to mental illness, we are hosting this event in honor of her, Monique Rozon," said Zumba Plus co-organizers Jasmine Delage and Adele Wilson.
In early March, an event in her honour raised $1,200 for the CMHA. But Angela Pilon, Rozon's daughter, and local businesses dedicated to health and well-being aren't stopping there.
"This event will have something for everyone," said Pilon, event co-organizer. "We are trying to encourage people to take care of their mental health by taking care of themselves."
Guests of the event will be pampered by a multitude of services, aiming to enhance their mental health/well-being for the evening. Each service requires a minimum donation of $5.
A series of booths will offer massages, hair styling, nail design, a magic show (Cornwall's Ryan Lalonde), and a juicing seminar, amongst others. Music will be provided by DJ Martin Pilon of MP Entertainment.
"I want to encourage people who are suffering to not be afraid to reach out," said Pilon. "If you know someone who is suffering offer support and resources. It's hard living with someone with a mental illness, but it's even harder living without them!"
