CORNWALL, Ontario – Inspired by Earth Day, a group of Viscount Alexander Public School Grade 3 students organized a school-wide fundraiser for endangered species supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The WWF fundraiser collected $150, and with this amount, the school was able to ‘adopt’ a cougar, which is the school’s mascot.
The symbolic adoption supports WWF’s global efforts to protect wild animals and their habitats.
As part of the endangered animal adoption package, the school will receive a certificate, photo, and a plush animal version.
“The group of students came down to the office one day and asked if they could put on this fundraiser,” said principal Darryl Beck. “We were happy to support it.”
Pupils at the Cornwall elementary school were assisted by the school’s student council and received guidance from teacher Andrea Hum.
Students sold raffle tickets to the student body for prize baskets, as well as the opportunity to name the cougar and choose additional animal adoptees.
Viscount Alexander raised more funds than expected and will now be able to adopt two animals in addition to the new Viscount cougar.
