Serving up support for a spay-cial cause

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Ontario SPCA branch of SD&G raised over $1,000 at a new fundraiser to help offset the cost of spaying and neutering animals in need.

The Spay-ghetti Dinner (without the meatballs) was held on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Cornwall.

“It was a little overwhelming because we did much better than I thought we were going to do,” said organizer Christina Russell.

Over 105 tickets were sold at $10 a piece to help the shelter cover the cost of surgeries as it adopts animals.

Handmade treats by Debbie of Scrum-Diddly Umptious were also for sale, with proceeds going to the animal shelter, and attendees had the chance to shop around at the DVD sale.

Louis Savard of Cornwall attended the dinner with his son Nicholas, 8, and a couple of friends, while his wife Angie helped to serve the meal.

“The OSPCA events are always great – whether it’s good fun, food, or walks with animals,’ he said.

Angie, a colleague of Russell, has been volunteering for a year.

She says the best way to describe her experience with helping to prepare the dinner was like planning a wedding.

“You get everything done and you know how it’s supposed to go, but up until the moment that it starts you have no idea what’s going to happen,’ she said.

Her love of animals brought her to volunteer, but seeing how many animals there are that need help, and what the shelter does for them is what keeps her motivated.

“I think anyone can just go to the shelter and have a look around and see that it needs help,’ she said.
