City Council approved a Cornwall Transit initiative to provide affordable transportation to persons receiving benefits from either Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) in the form a of a $34 Community Bus Pass.
A one-year Pilot Project starts February 1, 2009. Each month, 150 Community passes will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. As part of the Pilot Project, Handi-Transit registrants can purchase 25 ten-ride tickets for $34. The passes are now on sale at Cornwall Transit, 863 Second St. W. Proof of eligibility will be required.
As part of the Transit Comprehensive Review, it was recommended Cornwall Transit implement a reduced-fare pass for persons of low income. The Transit Committee supported the recommendation and termed the reduced fare pass the “Community Pass.” The Social Development Council of Cornwall & Area has identified affordable transportation as an important initiative to reduce poverty.
Research suggests a reduced fare Community Pass may help the most financially vulnerable citizens gain mobility throughout the community. According to Mr. Saint-Aubin, chair of the Transit Committee,”this initiative reflects both a caring community as well as a modern, forward-looking transit system.”
Transit Division Manager, Len Tapp stated, “Cornwall Transit ridership increased thirteen percent in 2008 and this initiative is expected to further increase ridership while providing an affordable lifeline within the community.” The Pilot Project is expected to be cost neutral, but Provincial Gas Tax Funds have been earmarked if any cost over runs are experienced.
