Yield to bus

It’s now been five years since the Ontario Government first introduced “Yield to Bus” legislation requiring all motorist to yield to buses as they re-enter traffic. From time to time it is important to remind drivers to “heed the law” and for drivers to understand the importance of letting buses back into traffic after they have picked up or dropped off passengers. When the bus signals its intention to leave a bus stop by activating the left turn signal, drivers approaching from the rear in the lane adjacent to the bus stop, are required, by law, to slow down or even stop, and allow the bus to re-enter traffic, unless it is unsafe to do so. It is very concerning when a car goes around a city bus only to find pedestrians are making their way across the street or when a vehicle veers into the oncoming traffic to negotiate their way around a bus!

It is always safer to simply “yield to the bus” (obey the sign on the back of the bus). Fines for failing to “yield to bus” trying to re-enter traffic ranges from $85 to $150. Make it a safe day for everyone.
