When Cornwall Transit users step on a bus, they’ll hear more than a friendly hello from the bus driver. As the bus approaches each stop, an automated voice will call out the bus stop locations – in both English and French.

The ‘Automated Voice Annunciation System’ has been installed on the entire Cornwall Transit Fleet of 14 buses, and has performed well during its initial operational test. Riders have reacted positively to the new system. “This voice system is an important step towards our goal of making all buses fully accessible for riders with disabilities” says Len Tapp, Division Manager of Cornwall Transit. “Helping alert riders to an upcoming stop is a valued service that benefits all.”

This new system alerts riders verbally (and visually) that a bus stop is approaching. Announcements are made approximately 200 feet before the actual bus stop. Similar systems can be found in transit systems around the world.

The $182,000 system uses GPS technology and was fully funded through the Ontario Gas Tax Fund. The system was set up and installed by Strategic Mapping Inc. of Toronto. Buses receive updates information such as route adjustments and detour information via a secure wireless network when the buses drive within close proximity to the Transit Garage.

New Buses Join the Fleet

Along with the announcement of the new Automated Voice Annunciation System, Cornwall Transit has also received three additional 30-foot buses. The new low-floor buses have been deployed on routes, joining three identical buses that have proved popular with riders since their introduction a year ago.

The new buses will replace three aging 40-foot buses (circa 1992) and were fully funded through the Ontario Bus Replacement Program and Ontario Gas Tax Fund. In addition to being ecologically friendly by reducing fuel consumption, the new buses offer easier access on and off the bus and can accommodate riders with wheelchairs and/or walking aids.
