Upper Canada Village launched its first annual Canadian Gingerbread House Championship at this year’s Alight at Night Festival, with a grand prize $1500 winner and other category bests being announced on the festival’s Opening Night, Saturday, November 28, 2009.
In total, 26 gingerbread creations were entered in the first annual Gingerbread House Championship at Upper Canada Village’s Alight at Night Festival, and all will be showcased for the duration of the festival against a stunning, holiday forest-like setting inside Crysler Hall, a stately 19th century building in the heart of the Village.
As inspiration, sixteen students from the Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School in Ottawa were commissioned by Festival organizers to construct four masterpiece gingerbread houses themed around some of the Village’s own buildings, as an added enhancement to the event. Some of these same students served as judges for the competition on Saturday night.
Winners and prizes awarded were as follows:
• The $1500 Grand Prize went to Eileen Jonhson and her beautifully crafted Victorian House. Along with the cash, Johnson will receive a two-night stay at the Guest House next door to Upper Canada Village, admission for two to Upper Canada Village with lunch at Willard’s Hotel included, dinner for two at the Village Antiques Tearoom Bed & Breakfast in Williamsburg, plus a round of golf for two with cart at the Upper Canada Golf Course including dinner for two at the golf course’s Upper Canadian Cookhouse.

Adult Category: 1st Place - $500 prize cheque, a two-night stay at the Montgomery House including lunch for two, admission for two to Upper Canada Village, ribbon – Roena Ryan
2nd Place - $300 prize cheque, a one-night stay at the Montgomery House including lunch for two, admission for two to Upper Canada Village, ribbon - Margo D' Alessio
3rd Place - $200 prize cheque, ribbon - Shauna Baggs

1st Place - $300 prize cheque, lunch for four at Willard’s Hotel, admission for four to Upper Canada Village, ribbon – Eliott Delage
2nd Place - $200 prize cheque, ribbon - Isaac Little
3rd Place - $100 prize cheque, ribbon - Samantha Peets
Youth Category
1st Place - $200 prize cheque, lunch for four at Willard’s Hotel, admission for four to Upper Canada Village, ribbon - Carli Reardon
