Cornwall Economic Development has partnered with Cornwall & Seaway Valley Tourism to launch an Information Radio station that will broadcast messages aimed at travellers on Highway 401.

Listeners can expect to hear the following public service messages during the 10 minute loop: • Weather Report from Environment Canada • Road conditions and construction reports from MTO • Dollar exchange rate from the Bank of Canada • Current Time • Local Events (Cornwall and Seaway Valley Tourism) • A variety of short information based features (Cornwall Economic Development) • Emergency messages (as appropriate) “We have over 17,000 vehicles passing Cornwall everyday along Highway 401,” said Bob Peters, Senior Development Officer with the City of Cornwall. “Reaching this moving audience is an important part of letting people know about the opportunities of living and doing business in the city.”

Ontario Tourism estimates that 92% of tourists travel by car, and it follows that much of the traffic along Highway 401 is tourists. The rest is made up of regional resident traffic and business traffic travelling between the three major cities of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. “Information radio allows us to deliver timely information about area attractions and events to travellers,” said Candy Pollard, Marketing Co-ordinator with Cornwall and Seaway Valley Tourism. “We have the ability to upload current information on a daily basis, drawing attention at the right time to events that are going on in the area.”

Local organizations who would like information on their event to be broadcast can email details to cornwall@informationradio.ca. Unfortunately, not all events can be covered, please contact Candy directly for more information.

Cornwall Information Radio is a pilot project between Cornwall Economic Development and Cornwall & Seaway Valley Tourism. The radio station has approximately a 10 km radius from its broadcast tower on top of Cornwall Community Hospital. The two organizations will assess the effort over the next year, although early feedback has been very positive.

Information Radio is currently operating radio stations in 10 communities, primarily in the Maritimes and Ontario. These include stations in Ottawa, Brockville and Kingston.

Our research says people who listen like what they hear. Our fast-paced 10-minute package is full of information they ‘need to know’ or ‘want to know’,” said Jack McGaw, President of Information Radio. “The information is current and reliable, much of it direct from public agencies that want to advise people of hazards or events that may influence their travel or entertainment plans.”

Cornwall Information Radio is also available online as a streaming audio broadcast at www.informationradio.ca

please fix it. the radio station is a great idea, even better if the announcements can be fixed so there intelligable. because right now there just jibberish. not a very good example for tourists, unless you want them to assume the whole city suffers from ADHD.
