Stormont County Fair: ‘Summer’s last hurrah’

Stormont County Fair: ‘Summer’s last hurrah’
Things got wet and wild for Ottawa's Jacob Weeks

CORNWALL, Ontario – For 148 years, the Stormont County Fair in Newington has been a Labour Day weekend tradition.

Organizers say over 12,000 people visit the fairgrounds from September 4-7 during the four-day event, which focuses on agriculture and farming.

This is where families get together annually for Labour Day weekend, then folks are off to college, or school – it’s summer’s last hurrah,” said Barbara-Ann Zummach, the fair’s secretary treasurer. “More than 300 volunteers from all over Stormont County rally to make sure it’s a success.

The Stormont County Fair began in a field east of Willard Wereley’s. It then made its way to Osnabruck Centre, until 1867, when the official Stormont Agricultural Society was formed and permanently moved it to Newington.
