City police are asking the province’s special investigation’s unit (SIU) to probe the death of a man who fell from the parking garage at the Cornwall Square.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
Under the Police Services Act, the director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation.
The inclusion of the SIU is done after nearly every incident in which police are involved that results in the death of an individual, so it should not be immediately concluded police have done anything wrong to this point.
Cornwall police arrived at the parking garage at about 7 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a man behaving in a suspicious manner.
Shortly after police arrival the 64-year-old individual fell from the third floor of the garage and was later pronounced dead at the Cornwall hospital.
The SIU has designated one subject officer and five witness officers in relation to this incident.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators continue to probe the circumstances of this incident. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-2038 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2038.
