The Cornwall Canal will be brought to life on Aug.10 and 11 during the Third Annual Sun Life Cornwall Waterfest, featuring dragon boat races, swimming races, a water run, artfest, a strongman competition, and more.
"We're excited about the slate of events for this year's Waterfest," said Johanna Murray, one of the event organizers. "We think it will be a hit with both participants and spectators."
Taking place at the west end of the canal near the Kinsmen soccer fields, Waterfest will once again play host to the dragon boat races on Aug.11. During this popular event, teams of 21 will work in unison to steer the boats along a 275-metre course. Each team participates in one practice run and three races, with the fastest teams moving on to the finals.
A number of teams have already registered, however there is still room for those interested. Experience isn't necessary as there are two divisions – a sport division and a fun division.
"The dragon boat races are a fun-filled activity, and it's a great team-building sport," added Murray. "They offer a great way to build company morale and team spirit."
In addition to the dragon boat races, a collection of local artists will be displaying and selling their work on Aug. 11 during the artfest portion of the event. Nine artists have already signed up to participate in the event, with more to be added. Artists who are interested in participating are asked to contact Patrick Guindon at guindon.patrick@gmail.com.
Other events returning this year include swimming races, a water run and the dragon egg drop. They will be complimented by a new strongman competition on Aug. 11.
Funds raised from Waterfest will go to the local chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
"We're grateful to be selected as the charity of choice," said area manager Cindy Rowe. "Physical activity can be a life-saver. When you're active, you can dramatically lower your risk of heart disease and stroke."
Volunteers are needed to assist with various activities on the day of the event. Interested individuals are asked to contact Don Daugherty at (613) 933-6282 x 3114 or volunteer@cornwallwaterfest.com.
