Local OPP will be on alert this Canada Day weekend.
The long weekend is considered to be one of the busiest as more people will be on the waterways, roads and trails. SD and G OPP say they will be patrolling the St. Lawrence River and major highways in the area.
On the roads, police will be looking for four things: distracted and aggressive driving, people under the influence of alcohol, and seatbelt use.
Police say they've already seen a high number of motor vehicle collision fatalities across Ontario leading up to the long weekend with 36 people killed in June alone.
Last year, there were seven deaths on Ontario's highways during the Canada Day weekend. In SD and G, there were 21 collisions but no fatalities.
As for the waterways, two OPP boats will be patrolling the river, checking the islands, channels and near campsites. Last year, there was one minor collision on the water that involved two sea-doos during the long weekend in SD and G.
