A city police officer has been found not criminally responsible after a Cornwall man plunged to his death from the Cornwall Square parking garage weeks ago.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) had been looking into the circumstances of the 64-year-old man's death after he fell from the three-storey parking complex May 24.
Investigators concluded the unnamed man consumed a lot of alcohol and was sitting next to his car along the north wall of the garage. The SIU also determined he disappeared over the side as the officer approached.
After calling for backup, the same officer performed CPR on the man as he lay bleeding on the sidewalk. An autopsy confirmed the man died from injuries sustained in the fall.
The SIU assigned three investigators and two foresenic investigators to the case. They interviewed four officers and three civilian witnesses. The SIU is an arm's legnth agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
