Outgoing CAO Paul Fitzpatrick won't be in on helping to select his successor, said Mayor Bob Kilger.

“Mr. Fitzpatrick will not be involved in the selection of his replacement,” said Kilger at a recent council meeting.

Insetad, a handful of city staff and councillors will leadh the search for a new chief administrative officer in the next couple of weeks.

Councillors gave the green light to create a hiring committee, which consists of human resources manager Dail Levesque, Coun. Elaine MacDonald and the city’s personnel committee of councillors Glen Grant, Denis Thibault and Denis Carr.

Councillors are also going to great lengths to spell out exactly what the new CAO will be responsible for.

The committee will work through all the applications before bringing the top two or three candidates to council for interviews.

For now planning, parks and recreation manager Stephen Alexander is filling in as acting chief administrative officer. Though former CAO Paul Fitzpatrick’s last day isn’t until January, he is taking unused vacation time and management leave until then.

Some councillors have suggested those not on the committee be kept up to date on the applicants and hiring process.

Suggesting that people other than the committee members be constantly updated entirely negates the purpose of empowering a committee!
