A high-speed crash on Water Street in front of the Cornwall Square saw police arrest one person from Cornwall and close a small section of the busy city thoroughfare.

Police said Sunday night, shortly after sunset, two vehicles collided in a spectacular crash that resulted in a Honda Civic resting on its side in the grass, several hundred feet from the street in Lamouruex Park. The Civic's rear bumper had been torn off the vehicle.

Witnesses said large tire marks were seen in the grass.

Another vehicle, a Mazda, came to a stop on top of the median which bisects Water Street - a light standard toppled over on top of it. Witnesses said broken glass was scattered on the road. Both vehicles appeared to be heading east at the time of the accident.

Investigators believe both cars approached a red light and while one anticipated the traffic signal turning green, the other didn't, resulting in the crash. Police say the occupants in both cars knew each other.

A Cornwall man was arrested by police at the scene.  He is facing charges of impaired driving and stunt driving. He was released to appear in court. It's believed one of the vehicles contained two females and three males. A pair of other males were in the second vehicle.

One person was transported to hospital via ambulance with minor injuries. The balance of the individuals also suffered some scrapes and bruising.
