Cornwall's new multi-sport facility has been recognized with an Excellence in Design Award by American Buildings Company.
The $32 million facility was named the Green Building of the Year and was profiled in a 24 page glossy publication distributed around the world. The Benson Centre also took Runner Up honours in the overall 'Building of the Year' category, beating out Auburn University's impressive indoor practice facility and placing second only to the White River Valley Electric Cooperative Building in Branson Missouri.
The Benson Centre was nominated for the award by Chris Markell of Bourgon Construction Ltd., who worked on the project with general contractor Pomerleau. The Benson Centre was designed by Barry • Bryan Associates (1991) Limited, Architects, Engineers.
"Having worked on the project I know first-hand how much thought went into the design and construction of the Benson Centre," said Mr. Markell. "Cornwall is very fortunate to have such an excellent facility to meet the needs of both residents and visitors."
American Building Company's annual Excellence in Design competition celebrates the ingenuity and creativity of builders and roofers. From warehouses to religious buildings, from recreational facilities to schools, and everything in between, the winning buildings are testaments to these companies who enhance their communities with structures that are as beautiful as they are functional.
"Our thanks go out to Mr. Markell for nominating the Benson Centre," said Mayor Bob Kilger. "This award not only recognizes the hard work of dozens of professionals who worked on designing and building the facility, but it also showcases Cornwall to the world."
The design and construction of the Benson Centre was a multi‐year project overseen by group of senior City administrators: Stephen Alexander, Richard Bourdeau and Christine Lefebvre. This team of Recreation department managers also worked with other City staff in Finance and the building office to ensure the project was delivered on time and on schedule.
"At the time, this was the largest building project ever undertaken by the City of Cornwall," notes Mr. Alexander. "Community input was essential to designing a building that has been immediately embraced by everyone - it has become a popular gathering spot for many citizens."
For this year's competition, judges reviewed more than 115 entries before selecting the best projects in each of the following categories: Agricultural; Church/Religious Center; Commercial; Government/Institutional; Green Building; Manufacturing/Industrial; Office; Recreation; Retail; Retrofit Roofing; Roofing; Self Storage; Transportation and Warehouse/Distribution. Winners and honorable mentions are announced for each category. The nominees then go on to compete for the Excellence in Design's top two awards: Building of the Year and Roof of the Year.
"We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our network of Builders and Roofers," said Ron Kuenkler, President of American Buildings Company. "We are honored to work with such a talented group and were impressed with the many deserving projects that were entered in this year's Excellence in Design competition."
The Benson Centre is in the process of being certified as a LEED building. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system that provides building owners and operators with a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
