A St. Regis man has been charged by Cornwall police with arson and attempted murder following a domestic incident that turned ugly on the weekend.
Police said the man, 20, lit the fire early Saturday morning at the corner of Third Street East and Gloucester in Cornwall.
He was picked up by the cops on Sunday.
"It's domestic related," Cornwall Community Police Service Const. Melaine Labelle said in an interview. She said the man found out that his ex-girlfriend was at the home of her sister and took it upon himself to light the house on fire.
The relationship had ended prior to the fire, said Labelle.
The fire consumed most of the house at 403 Third Street East, but a damage estimate has not been provided.
Labelle said no one was injured.
"Everybody was able to leave...even the animals," she said.
The man was co-operative upon his arrest and was held for bail Monday.
Labelle said there have been a handful of arson complaints this year, resulting in two charges.
