A Cornwall police special constable was assaulted by a prisoner in a secure hallway at the city's courthouse this week.

The officer, a 65-year-old who is a veteran member of the local police service, was treated for injuries at the Cornwall Community Hospital and then released.

Calvin Ceasor, 24, was charged with assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm and breaching his probation.

It's unclear what provoked the assault. The Cornwall courthouse includes a small cell block area where prisoners are held prior to, and after appearing in court. A secure hallway connects the courtrooms that is inaccessible by the public.

Other special constables came to the aid of the officer. Prisoners taken to court are normally shackled about the ankles, but are rarely handcuffed.
