On Jan. 30 the St. Lawrence River Institute will launch its 2013 Science and Nature Speaker Series by inviting the public to take part in a cosmic journey search of life beyond earth.

The public is invited to join astronomer Dr. Tom Olien at the Cornwall Public Library as he explores the 21st century science of Astrobiology in an attempt to answer the age old mystery: “Are We Alone?”

“Finding life elsewhere may very well offer clues as to how life began on earth," said Olien. "Astrobiology provides us with a greater understanding of the conditions in which life can survive and even thrive.”

Recent advances in technologies, including the addition of many new satellite observatories have encouraged a surge of interest in life beyond earth. Probes to other solar system objects have made the reality of space accessible to labs and living rooms alike.

A passionate scientist, Olien says, “Astrobiology is the exciting science of searching for life beyond our planet. It combines a multidisciplinary approach with new technologies.”

Please call the Institute in advance to reserve your seat at (613) 936-6620 or go to the institute website at www.riverinstitute.ca.
