The province has denied a city hall request to complete a coyote cull in Cornwall's north end.
Coun. Denis Thibault confirmed Wednesday the city has received an e-mail from the Ministry of Natural Resources detailing the denial.
Last year council sent the province a request to go ahead with a coyote cull in the Eamer's Corners area.
Residents in that area have signed a petition, suggesting pets and children are at risk of attacks and requesting the city do something to alleviate the problem.
Thibault has penned an e-mail to his fellow councillors and top managers, asking them to take another look at the issue and put a plan in place to help residents coexist with the coyotes.
Thibault has had discussions with representatives of Coyote Watch Canada. The group is suggesting the city follow the lead of Niagara Falls, which has created a Living With Coyotes Program.
"There haven't been any coyote sightings in the last couple of weeks, I've heard," said Thibault. "When spring comes around, we'll most likely be back in the same situation - so what's the plan?
"If Niagara, with their population, can do it, why can't Cornwall?"
