If there's one thing Cornwall residents love, it's a fireworks display.

This year, for Winterfest 2013, fireworks lovers are getting a triple shot of the good stuff.

The annual winter festival, which runs Feb. 14 to 18 will feature three nights of back-to-back fireworks displays in Lamoureux Park, Friday to Sunday, by David Whysall’s Team Canada International Fireworks team.

Jason Mitchell, chair of Winterfest 2013, told Seaway News in an interview the carnival directors have been trying to build on past successes.

"We want to do something different every year," said Mitchell.

Part of the attraction this year will be Winterfest won't cost patrons a thing. There is no addmittance charge for the carnival and the events taking place at the park and around the city are free.

"It's always been our mandate...to provide a festival for the whole community," said Mitchell. "It's a good opportunity for everyone to take part."

Mitchell said the fireworks displays will last 10 minutes each night. Unlike other exhibitions where a few fireworks are shot off at a time, to drag the event on, the show "will be like the finale for the whole thing."

Last year some 23,000 ventured down to the park for the festival, which kind of took organizers by surprise.

"My goal last year was a lot less than that," said Mitchell. "This year we're hoping for 30,000.

"And I have a feeling with three nights of fireworks we'll get it."

There are also a slew of activities taking place that includes skating, swimming, bowling and movies - all free.
