CORNWALL, Ontario - Coun. Elaine MacDonald will seek the nomination for the local NDP riding in the looming provincial election.

She e-mailed the following news release:

On March 27, I will formally seek the nomination of the Stormont Dundas South Glengarry New Democratic Party provincial association. As a councillor in the city of Cornwall, I have participated in the formulation of public policy through debate, collaboration and negotiation and I want to exercise that skill set at the provincial level, developing policies that support and enhance the municipalities’ ability to conduct their mandates, at the same time, work to put the public interest in the forefront of provincial policy. I want to be part of the team that brings stability, sustainability and longterm planning to provincial policy.

The next election, whenever it is called, may see a majority or a minority government; no matter. I will work with other parties to advance the wellbeing of people across the province, and I will be mindful that my first responsibility will be to the people in SDSG. We need good-paying jobs, youth employment, access to higher education, healthcare we can count on, greater affordability for everyday people and a fairer tax system, one that will pay for essential services and help the province balance its books. I’m running for the opportunity to work for these conditions.

The nomination meeting will be at the Navy Veterans' Club, 30 Sixth Street East, Cornwall, at 7:30 p.m.
