Would-be thieves caught in Cornwall store

CORNWALL, Ontario - Two Cornwall people were arrested last week after getting stopped by a security guard at a local store after failing to pay for merchandise they removed.

It is alleged that on Friday they attended a Second Street East store and a loss prevention officer nabbed them before they could make their getaway.

Police were called and the pair were arrested.

Mary Sophrina Whiteford, 49 of Cornwall was charged with theft under $5000 and three counts of fail to comply with an undertaking. She was released to appear in court on July 2.

Kevin Simser, 29 of Cornwall was charged with theft under $5,000, possession of a controlled substance, two counts of fail to comply with an undertaking and breach of probation order. He was held in custody until court the following day.

Upon his arrest he was allegedly found in possession of hydromorphone.
