CORNWALL, Ontario – Young entrepreneurs still hitting the books have a chance to run their own business with the help of a city program.

Students who want to launch their own business, receive hands-on training and a $3,000 jumpstart are in luck. The Summer Company program is accepting applications for their 2014 campaign. Pictured: Leah Wells, Summer Company 2012 participant and owner of Fallwind Jewellery.

Summer Company 2014 is a chance for students ages 15 to 29 in Cornwall, SD & G and Akwesasne to get some hands-on business training and receive up to $3,000 to start their own business.

In the past seven years, 42 students have opened and successfully run their own businesses. Spaces for Summer Company 2014 have been increased with funding for almost 200 additional participants across the province.

The program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment (MEDTE) and administered by the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre.

“Summer Company is an exciting opportunity for students to do something they love, and learn about the business world first hand,” said Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre (CBEC) business consultant Candy Pollard.

CBEC assists students in starting and running their own business through the summer months. Interested students are encouraged to contact the CBEC for more information regarding eligibility and program requirements.

"Not only does the student get to be their own boss, and receive start-up funding, they also gain valuable entrepreneurial skills as they turn their business idea into a reality," said Pollard.

CBEC staff are available for assistance in completing applications and answering enquiries. Contact the Centre by calling (613) 930-2787 ext. #2277 or e-mail cpollard@cornwall.ca.
